Staff Reporter :
Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar on Monday said, the Election Commission does not want to hold such an election, as can breed questions among people about its role.
Mahbub Talukder recognizes the 11 National Election as an episode in the history of Bangladesh to shine.
“We cannot hold a questionable election and lose our glory.”
The Commissioner said this while speaking in the inaugural programme of a training workshop of government officials in the city’s Nirbachan Bhaban.
Election Commission Secretary Helaluddin Ahmad presided over the workshop.
He also asked root level election officers to build credibility and confidence in the voters and candidates of the election.
“Don’t allow any leniency. We don’t want a controversial election,” he said.
“Build credibility and confidence… So that the candidates can rely on you; the voters can exercise their franchise,” he told during training.
“If you fail, the election will fail. If you shine, the nation will shine. We can’t allow the election to flow in the opposite direction,” he said strongly.
The Election Commissioner said that around 2,026 government officials will be trained all over the country whereas 408 officials will be trained through the workshop and the training programme will continue until 09 December.
Mentioning that there was no continuity in the election in the country, he said, “Now we are going to create a tradition through holding a honest and participatory election”.
He also warned that the negligence of the government officials in performing the election duty will not be tolerated.
Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said that candidates who were disqualified by the Commission can file appeals on December 3,4,5.
He said the Commission will hold a meeting with senior officials of law enforcement agencies on December 13. They will be given directions how to maintain law and order at the field level during the election.
