Election Commissioner Shah Nawaz has expressed his dissatisfaction over law enforcers, local administration and field level polling officers for not discharging their duties properly “in many cases” during the upazila polls.
“We have no hesitation to say the people, whom we used for election duties, did not discharge their duties properly in many cases. That is why, we can not say that the elections were totally fair and we are totally satisfied,” he told journalists at the EC secretariat on Tuesday.
“The commission alone can not carry out all the works for holding elections. It is a work of chain of command and involves many people including law enforcers and officers of administration,” he observed.
Asked why the EC did not take action against such negligence of duties, he said the commission could not take action as the returning officers or assistant returning officers concerned did not officially inform the commission about it.
Rather, they denied the allegations in most cases, he added. Admitting that there were some irregularities and vote rigging in the upazila polls, he said the EC will sit soon to review the entire election process as to why there were failures and find out solutions of the problems.
