Early preparedness to reduce disaster risks underscored

Early preparedness, adequate social awareness, knowledge and efficient emergency response management systems could reduce the growing risks of natural disasters amid adverse impacts of climatic change.
The opinion came at a seminar styled ‘Cold wave and other natural disaster:
Perspective Panchagarh’ organised by the district administration at conference room of the Deputy Commissioner in Panchagarh district town.
The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief extended cooperation in arranging the seminar participated by government officials, NGO executives, public representatives, teachers of different educational institutions, civil society members and journalists.
Deputy Commissioner of Panchagarh Amal Krishna Mandal attended the seminar as the chief guest with Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Mahmudul Alam in the chair.
Superintendent of Police for Panchagarh Giasuddin Ahmed attended the event as the special guest while District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Matiur Rahman delivered welcome speech.
Assistant Professor of the Department of Geography Panchagarh Pathraj College Altaf Hossain and Assistant Commissioner Suman Zihadi delivered separate presentations in the seminar.
District Controller of Food for Panchagarh Abdul Kader, District Muktijoddha Commander Mirja Abul Kalam Dulal, Executive Director of “Paraspor’ Akhterun Nahar Saki and District Representative of BRAC AK Azad, addressed, among others.
The resource persons discussed about various types of natural disasters, adverse impacts of climate change and indentified cold wave, earthquake and thunderbolts as the major natural disasters for the sub-Himalayan district of Panchagarh.
They put special emphasis on well-coordinated efforts of the government and non-government organisations to disseminate knowledge among the common people for ensuring early awareness to reduce losses during natural calamities and disasters.
The chief guest said the government with NGOs has been working hard to reduce disaster risks through efficient emergency response management systems, early preparedness and effective dissemination of information and warnings among the common people.
He put emphasis on making the common people aware about natural disasters and called upon all concerned to take well- coordinated and adequate steps to reduce the extent of damages during natural disasters.
