Dust pollutes air badly

Dust pollutes air seriously and makes the city dwellers suffer from bronchitis and other related diseases, sources said.
The density of dust increases when it does not rain or when the City Corporation does not wet road with water.
“We cannot take breath easily in polluted air. Our children suffer most,” said Rafiqul Islam, a city resident from Jatrabari.
Intense heat sweeps the country. In absence of rain, dust is becoming thicker. The commuters, the pedestrians and the school going children suffer from the dust every day.
Sources said, many roads of Dhaka city are damaged. At the same time, the utility services are digging roads in many areas of the city. The utility services, including Bangladesh Telecommunication Company Ltd (BTCL), Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC), Titas Gas and Dhaka WASA are digging the roads which have spread huge dust in the air.
The city residents have accused the City Corporations of failing to discharging their duties of coordinating the work of the utility services. They have not sprayed water to reduce dust to save the air from serious pollutions.
Mintu Mian, a resident from Wari, said with dismay that dust make the children sick. One of his minor sons is studying at a nearby school of Gandaria.
“On the way to school every day with my nursery level studying son, I become anxious for his health, because of the air full of dusts. How does my son manage to take breath in the wave of dusts when a vehicle passes by?” he said.
” It is not justice to spray water in winter only. The City Corporations should spray water whenever there are dusts”, he said.
Some of the guardians of the same school children, said, many of their babies become sick with bronchitis and influenza type diseases mostly caused by the dusts of the air.
Dust and the sands make the air thick, making the breath harder in case of the older persons, children and sick people.
After contact, the Dhaka South City Corporations Mayor Sayeed Khokon told The New Nation,”We normally spray water in the city area to reduce the dusts in the winter. We hope that it may rain soon. The monsoon is coming ahead. With the raining, dusts will be reduced soon. The utility services have been requested not to dig the city streets in an unplanned and uncoordinated way.
“We are trying to reduce public sufferings,” he said.
The Dhaka North City Corporation’s Mayor Annisul Haque could not be contacted over cell phone.
