Dubai Port World invited to study Paira Port feasibility

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday invited the Dubai Port World (DP World) Authority to conduct a feasibility study on constructing a deep sea port at Paira Sea Port in Bangladesh.
The Prime Minister made the request when Chairman of the Dubai Port World Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem met her at her hotel suite here.
During the meeting, detailed discussions were held on Dubai Port World Authority’s investment in various sectors, especially
in infrastructure development in Bangladesh. After the meeting, Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque briefed reporters. PM’s Media Adviser Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, PMO Secretary Md Abul Kalam Azad and Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhury were present.
The Foreign Secretary said Sheikh Hasina also requested the DP World to conduct a feasibility study on the construction of 150-km marine drive from Mirsarai to Teknaf and a special economic zone in Chittagong.
He said, the construction of a deep sea port at Paira Sea Port in Patuakhali already in operation, a naval base and big power plant got a special focus during the meeting.
The Prime Minister said, an ample scope has been created in the Bay of Bengal following reestablishment of Bangladesh’s sovereignty over a vast maritime area after Bangladesh’s win over maritime boundary disputes against India and Myanmar.
Responding positively to Bangladesh’s request, the DP World Authority said they usually set up a Special Economic Zone near any sea port to make it viable and will send a delegation to Bangladesh soon for the next course of action.
