The Dhaka University (DU) Syndicate on Sunday granted force-leave to a teacher of the Physics Department on the charge of misconduct with a senior teacher of the department.
The teacher identified as Professor ABM Obaidul Islam is also former General Secretary of DU Teachers’ Association. The syndicate decided it in its regular meeting held on Sunday night.
The pro-BNP members in the syndicate protested the decision and urged for review.
When contacted, Professor ABM Obaidul Islam said that the syndicate had taken the decision without any reason.
Sources said that Physics Department Chairman Professor Azizur Rahman sold some equipment of the department beyond the knowledge of the finance committee. The finance committee is consisted of Professor Khandoker Sadat Hossain, Professor ABM Obaidul Islam, Dr Wahiduzzaman and Dr Naimul Islam. Professor Khandoker Sadat Hossain and Professor ABM Obaidul Islam went to chairman’s room to know how he took the decision without informing them. At one stage, the department Chairman Professor Azizur Rahman hurled abusive words at ABM Obaidul Islam.
Later, Professor Azizur Rahman submitted a written statement to Vice-Chancellor of DU Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique for action against Professor Obaidul Islam. He said in the statement that Obaidul Islam misbehaved with him.
On the other hand, Professor Obaidul Islam also submitted a written statement to Vice-Chancellor explaining the situation. He said that he did not misbehave with the department chairman. Rather he tried to assault him.
After long discussion the syndicate granted force leave to Obaidul Islam.
