Students of Mass Communication and Journalism(MCJ) department of Dhaka University (DU) on Thursday formed a human chain at the foot of Aparajeyo Bangla protesting ‘the attack on general students by some Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists’.
More than one hundred students covering the mouth with black cloths participated in the human chain and demanded punishment of the BCL men who assaulted students on Tuesday in front of the Vice-chancellor’s office.
Expressing solidarity with the students of Journalism Department’s associate professor Fahmidul Haq said, “Students of the university have the right to go to the Vice-Chancellor’s office to press home their demands but in front of the VC a specific students’ organization leaders and activists can never attack the general students.”
Tarek Hasan, a post-graduate student of the department and an organiser of the protest programme, said it was a shock for them to see the BCL men attacking the protesting students with iron rods and sticks.
“We demand the university authorities take immediate action against the offenders,” he said.
On Tuesday, a section of DU students confined VC Prof Akhtaruzzaman to his office more than four hours protesting a previous assault on students by some BCL men and demanding scrapping of affiliation of seven colleges with DU. At one stage at least 30 BCL men led by its central leaders attacked the students, leaving several of them injured.
