A group of Dhaka University students clash with shop owners at Nilkhet book market on Saturday evening, setting fire to shops and vandalising vehicles. A group of Dhaka University (DU) students fought pitched battles with shop owners at the nearby Nilkhet market on Saturday evening. Several shops in Nilkhet, which is the biggest book market in Dhaka, have been torched. The 30-minute-long clash also left at least 15 people injured. They were admitted at DU Medical Centre and Dhaka Medical College and Hospital. Conditions of four of them were critical, DU Proctor Amzad Ali told bdnews24.com. Police said the clashes broke out around 5:45pm. Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Ramna division Deputy Commissioner Maruf Hossain Sardar told bdnews24.com it was still unclear what triggered the skirmish. “We have, however, taken control of the situation,” he said around 6:20pm. bdnews24.com’s Dhaka University Correspondent Sujon Mondol said police had fired rubber bullets and teargas to disperse the warring groups.
