DU students demand lawful seats and abolition of ‘torture cell’

A group of Dhaka University (DU) students formed a human chain demanding legal seats in the residential halls from first year, and abolition of ‘torture cell’ in the dormitories of the university on Thursday.
Students from various departments took part in the human chain at the foot of Aparajeyo Bangla around 12:30 pm.
“Legal seat is my right”, a student rights based platform of the university organized the programme.
In the human chain, the students announced a 6-point demand, including

legal seat from first year, abolition of guest room or torture cell and mass room from the dormitories of the university.
In the human chain, Shah Jahan Tanim, a fresher of English Department said that he had to leave his dormitory for not attending in Chhatra League’s program.He also alleged that the BCL activists used to assault general students regularly in guest rooms in the name of teaching manner.
Nahid Islam, a third-year student of Sociology Department said, “The murder of Abrar is not an isolated incident, rather a manifestation of torture throughout the public universities in Bangladesh. Abar’s murder is a reflection of the killing of Hafiz and Abu Bakar. Chhatra League does not want to stop the guestroom culture, as they will not have the manpower in their programs.”
Another student Ishratul Jahan Nishi said, “I came to this university to study with a free spirit. But where is the environment? We are not even getting our rights.We fear to speak anything freely.”
