DU celebrates 96th founding anniv

Dhaka University (DU) was synonymous with the history of Bangladesh, said its VC on Saturday while delivering his speech as the chief guest at a programme celebrating the 96th founding anniversary.
“The DU bears testimony to the country’s history and tradition. It’s inseparable from our nation’s glorious heritage. Right from the Language Movement in 1952, DU students have been in the vanguards of all mass movements in the country,” Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique said.
To celebrate the day, the Dhaka University (DU) authority had undertaken various programmes with the theme- “Higher Education for Innovation and Development”.
DU Vice-Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique inaugurated the programme in the morning by releasing pigeons and balloons and remembered the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the language martyrs and the Liberation War martyrs.
The celebration began through hoisting the national flag, DU flag and flags of different dormitories of the university at Mall Chattar, adjacent to the administrative building at 10am and a number of processions were brought out from different residential halls by the students, teachers, officials and employees.
Students, teachers, researchers and members of alumni associations had been celebrating the day on the campus since morning with much enthusiasm and festivity.
Different buildings and infrastructures of DU were decorated and a day-long programme, including discussions and cultural sessions, sports and debate competitions, were chalked out to mark the day.
Besides, the Central Library organized a rare manuscript exhibition from 10am to 1pm while different faculties, departments and halls organized separate programmes.
Dhaka University (DU) is the oldest university in the country. Once it was called “Oxford of the East” during its early year which was launched with 847 students in three faculties and 12 departments. It has become the largest public university in the country serving more than 37,018 students through 1,992 faculties in 67 departments and 10 institutes.
