DU calls for joint fight against militancy

The teachers, students and employees of Dhaka University (DU) on Monday called upon the educated and conscious people all over the country to unite under an umbrella and to fight against militancy and terrorism.
Only a united effort can eliminate the elements of militancy and other evil forces from the country. The teachers, the students and the guardians and other conscious people should to work to create awareness about the militancy, they said.
The family said this at a human chain held on the university campus under the banner “Dear Bangladesh, stand against militancy and terrorism” (Priyo Bangladesh, Jongibad O Sontrash Er Biruddhe Ruche Darao) with a view to protest the recent terror attacks.
The programme started at about 11am and ended at 1pm with the participation of around 10 thousand teachers, students and employees of all the departments, faculties.
All the participants also took oath not to involve in militancy and to prevent it with ultimate power.
Academic and administrative activities of the university remained halted for two hours following the programme.
DU Vice-Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique said, Islam teaches us peace and love. It never supports violent activities. Those who are involved in the violent activities in the country in the name of Islam they are in wrong way.
“The Gulshan café and Sholakia attacks are unexpected. The government should bring the responsible persons under justice immediately,” the DU VC said.
He said, no educated and conscious people could involve in militancy. United efforts are needed to prevent the militancy.
The VC also warned the teachers, the students and the employees that the DU authorities would take stern action including suspension if anyone finds involvement with the militancy.
DU Pro-VC (Education) Professor Nasrin Ahmed said, “The attackers are our children. We will have to be more alert if we see any abnormality in their behaviour.”
Nazim Farayezi, a student of Tourism and Hospitality Management, said, the Dhaka University played important and pivotal role during all the crucial moments of the nation. It started protest against the militancy. “The university has also declared war against the militancy. So, I hope that the militancy will be removed from the country,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Education Ministry asked all the educational institutions across the country to arrange human chain on August 1 in protest of recent terror attacks and to create awareness among the teachers, the students and the guardians about militancy and terrorism.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said, “We sat with the public and private university administrations, college and madrasa principals and asked to take proper initiative to save their teachers, students and campus from militancy activities.”
“We have been working to create militancy free campus across the country. It is possible to vanish the harmful elements from the society if the teachers work properly,” the Minister said.
Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamiatul Modarresin Sabbir Ahmed Momtazi told The New Nation on Monday that the madrasa administrations across the country have alredy taken preparation to hold the rally on August 1.
