Dhaka University (DU) authorities on Saturday turned down the allegations of vote-rigging and irregularities in the elections to Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) and its hall unions.
No returning officer received any allegation that anyone failed to cast his/her vote or their vote was cast anyone else in the elections, the university
said in a statement. Besides, there was no allegation that anyone was harassed during the election, it said.
The authorities said the students foiled the attempt of those who were trying to gain their political interests through creating an unstable situation across the country unleashing violence and untoward incidents on the Dhaka University campus.
The statement said along with the chief returning officer and his team, a total of 450 teachers and staff of the university were involved in the elections and they performed their duties as per the code of conduct. “No teacher or official brought any allegation of irregularities at any stage of the election,” it said.
The university also directed students to inform the authorities if they have any evidence of vote-rigging and irregularities in the elections, assuring that it will take proper actions after investigation.
Referring to the recovery of a bag full of sealed ballot papers from by a polling booth at Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall, the university described it as ‘unfortunate’, saying the voting was suspended there soon after the incident and a five-member committee was formed to investigate the matter.
The March-11 Ducsu polls, the first in 28 years, were marred by allegations of irregularities. All panels, except that of Awami League’s student front Bangladesh Chhatra League, boycotted the elections alleging vote fraud.
Chhatra League’s panel dominated the polls but its VP candidate was defeated by quota reform movement leader Nurul Haq Nur.
