DU Correspondent :
The students of the Bengali Department of Dhaka University (DU) on Thursday demonstrated protesting the decision of the education ministry that the students obtaining graduation degrees from the Linguistic Department could be the teachers of Bengali Department in the government colleges.
The Bengali Department received a letter in this connection from the ministry on March 12. Knowing it, the students boycotted classes and formed a human chain in front of the Aparajeyo Bangla.
They also brought out a
procession on the campus yesterday from in front of the Bengali Department and ended at the base of Aparajeyo Bangla after parading different roads. Later, they held a rally there.
The students said, the education ministry’s decision is illogical. The ministry cannot take such decision without any rational causes.
“We (students of Bengali Department) study at least 3000 marks syllabus, whereas the students of Linguistic Department study 100 marks only. These two cannot be equal. Then how does the education ministry take the decision that the students of Linguistic Department can be the teachers of Bengali Department in all the government colleges through competitive examination conducted by the Public Service Commission? We cannot accept it. That is why we are protesting,” said the aggrieved students.
The students threatened of launching tough movement if the ministry did not withdraw its direction.
They will hold a press conference at the Modhu’s Canteen on Sunday to decide next course of action.
