Yaba trading has increased recently in Sylhet city and it’s adjoining areas causing concern to the peace-loving people.
Some 2287 pieces of Yaba have been seized by law-enforcers in the first 8 months of 2017. This year 13,917 pieces of Yaba have been seized in the same time. Last year weight of seized hemp (gaja) was 225 kgs while this year amount seized weighs 267 kgs. Not only yaba-hemp (gaja), the number of other seized drugs is increasing. Narcotics Control Directorate expressed this figure. M Zahid Hussain Mollah, Assistant Director of Narcotics Control Directorate Sylhet Zone informed seized pile of wine are many times more this year. The Directorate continued this operation to eradicate drug and it’s abuse.
In the divisional office of Narcotics Control Directorate informed, from January to August 2018 about 1349 operations were held by the directorate while last year at the same time its number was 1353. In the previous year 408 cases were lodged. But this year 432 cases have been lodged. Last year the number of accused persons was 457. This year the number of accused persons is 477.
It has been learnt, from the reports of the operation taken up in first 8 months of this year 267.363 kgs hemp (gaja) 13917 pieces of yaba, 2400 bottles of heroin liquors, 2 gm solid heroin, 85 bottles of phensidyl, 734 litres of homemade wine, 18260 litres wine and 60 litres D.S. have been seized by Narcotics Department personnels who lodged 244 regular cases. Mobile Court carried out 188 operations. Total number of cases is 1349. Of them 510 in Sylhet, 234 in Sunamgonj 283 in Habigonj and 322 in Moulvibazar. In these operations, one private car, one bus, one microbus, one pickup and one C.N.G. auto-rickshaw were seized.
From January to August 2018 the Directorate conducted 1353 operations. They lodged 167 regular cases. Total number of Mobile Court operations were 241. Total number of cases were 408. During that time 225.600 kgs hemp (gaja) 1335 bottles foreign wine 2287 pieces of yaba, 8 gm heroin, 113 bottles phensidyl, 702 litres home made wine, 6000 litres wine, 1745 litres D.S and 90 litres patches have been seized. Along with one pickup and 2 C.N.G autorickshaw were seized. In first 8 months of 2017 in Sylhet 431, Sunamgonj 284, Hobigonj 256 and Moulovibazar 382 operations have been conducted. This year the wine played an aggressive part.
Assistant Directorate of Narcotics Directorate Sylhet Zone M. Zahid Hussain Mollah said, ‘We have been facing shortage of man power. But they conducted operations regularly. This year huge amount of wine have been seized. As the area is adjacent to border, wine peddlers carry wine technically. We try to control it’.
