A suspected drug peddler was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Khilkhet area of the capital on early Monday.
The deceased was identified as Mizanur Rahman Mintu alias Megha Mintu, 34. He was accused in 13 criminal cases.
A RAB team raided the area around 1:15am after
being tipped-off that a group of drug peddlers had gathered on the opposite side of Pink City, said Md Kamruzzaman, senior assistant superintendent of police and company commander of RAB-1.
As soon as the RAB team reached the spot, the drug peddlers opened fire, triggering a skirmish, he said.
Mizanur suffered gunshot wounds during the gunfight. RAB arrested him after the skirmish and took him to Kurmitola General Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead, the ASP said.
A RAB member was injured during the gunfight. Two shotguns, a shootergun, and 993 Yaba pills were recovered from the spot, Kamruzzaman said.
