Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) has expressed disappointment at the Grameen Phone’s (GP) decision of withdrawing from sponsoring the ‘DRU-GP Best Reporting Award’.
The DRU leaders said, it now faces an embarrassing situation following the GP’s last minute decision to back out from sponsorship The GP started sponsoring the ‘DRU-GP Best Reporting Award’ since 2013.
DRU deals with 1,400 reporters working with different print, electronic and online media and news agency in Dhaka.
“The DRU was taking preparation to invite reports from reporters for the DRU-GP Best Reporting Award. But the
GP authorities all on a sudden informed the organization that they were not in a position to patronize the award anymore citing financial reasons. To us, it is nothing but breach of trust” the statement said.
DRU President Shakhawat Hossain Badsha and General Secretary Elias Hossain in a statement said, GP cannot do it at the last moment as the journalists’ body had asked the reporters to submit their reports for the nomination.
According to the statement, leaders of the DRU even held a series of meetings with the GP authorities in April, 2015. In those meetings, the telecom operator pledged to continue their support for the DRU award.
The DRU contacted Talat Mahmud, the newly appointed in-charge of the media and communications cell of the GP about the issue. The GP said that financial loss prompted them taking the decision. “The GP authorities informed the DRU on May 24 that they won’t be patronizing for the DRU-GP Best Reporting Award any more according to a decision taken by the board of the telecom operator.
Financial loss was shown as the reason behind the decision,” the statement said. The DRU executive committee expressed disappointment at the decision of the GP and communicated it to all the members of the DRU.
