Staff Reporter :A goods-laden truck driver was killed and three of his associates sustained serous burn injuries in a petrol bomb attack at Chandra Chourasta in Chandpur sadar in the early hours of Thursday.The BNP-led 20-party alliance’s countrywide ongoing blockade entered the 72nd day on Thursday, alongside hartals.The deceased was identified as Mohammad Jahangir Alam, 40, hailing from Jhikargachha upazila of Jessore district. The three other seriously injured persons are — Khorshed Alam, 30, Rubel Hossain, 30, and Sharif — all hailing from Baghcara area of Jessore. They were rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).Abdul Quaiyum, Officer-in-Charge of Chandpur Model Police Station, said when a Jessore bound goods-laden truck from Chittagong reached Chandra Chourasta, the pro-hartal and blockade supporters hurled petrol bomb on it. “As soon as the petrol bomb attack was launched, the truck caught fire. The driver, Jahangir Alam, died on the spot while three others sustained serious burn injuries,” he said.Besides, the miscreants hurled a petrol bomb on another goods-laden truck near Guchchhogram at Raghunathpur in the same district.The OC said the miscreants waylaid the truck and then launched petrol bomb attack. Both the driver and helper jumped out of the truck to save their lives and got injured. The injured driver was identified as Amanat Khan, 40, and helper as Kalu Bepari, 22.In Sirajganj, four leaders and workers of BNP and Jamaat were arrested from different areas of the district in the early hours of Thursday. The arrested persons were identified as Hasan Iqbal, Nazrul Islam, Gias Uddin and Abdus Sobhan. “They were wanted in several cases, including for obstructing police from discharging their duties and subversive activities,” Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station Habibul Islam confirmed.In Jessore, police arrested at least 69 persons, including BNP-Jamaat leaders and activists, from different places of the district in the early hours of Thursday.In Lalmonirhat, police arrested at least 13 leaders and workers of BNP-Jamaat from different places of Patgram upazila in the district yesterday.In Manikganj, police arrested two BNP workers from Singair upazila of the district.In Gaibandha, at least five Jamaat workers were arrested from different places of the district.
