Drive continues to evict illegal encroachers from Buriganga River bank

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has conducted an eviction drive for the second consecutive day on the banks of the river Buriganga in the capital city in order to recover the land occupied by Dhaka-7 MP Haji Mohammad Selim.
The operation started from 11 am and continued till 1.30 on Monday.
BIWTA officials said the unauthorized structures would be demolished from the area adjacent to the Babubazar Bridge to Soarighat, occupying the river site.
It was seen yesterday on the spot that the embankment road from Babubazar Bridge to Soarighat was demolished by excavators on the north side of the road.
After start of the operation, other occupants were removing the necessary goods from their installations voluntarily.
Due to the BIWTA operation, the vehicular traffic movement in the area was stopped.
At least a thousand curious people, including members of the law enforcement force, were on the scene.
BIWTA Executive Magistrate Mahbub Jamil was leading the operation.
Dhaka River Port Control Officer Gulzar Ali, Assistant Director Rezaul Karim and other officials of the company were also present.
Assistant Director Rezaul Karim told the media that at least 30 establishments had been demolished by 12:30 pm since the operation began.
Earlier on Sunday, the BIWTA recovered its three acres of land from Waiz Ghat and Badamtali areas from Haji Salim’s possession.
