The Chittagong district administration has launched a drive against the illegal sale of petrol from yesterday morning.
The move comes in a bid to prevent the saboteurs from collecting petrol for making bombs which are being used in attacks during the ongoing countrywide blockade and hartals called by the BNP-led 20-party alliance.
Mobile courts, run by the administration, arrested two people including an owner of a re-fuelling station and sentenced them varied terms in prison during the first day’s drive.
Two mobile courts, led by executive magistrates Habibil Hasan and Asif Imtiaz, carried out drives in the city yesterday.
Sources said Executive Magistrate Habibil Hasan ordered the arrest of Abul Kashem, owner of Saikat Filling Station, in the city’s EPZ area for selling fuel without renewing the licence from the department of explosives. The court sentenced him to two month’s imprisonment and also fined Tk 5,000.
“We have started the drive against petrol dealers and retail sellers who are selling petrol without any valid licence, as per the direction of Chittagong Deputy Commissioner Mesbah Uddin,” said Habibul.
The magistrate said the owner of Saikat Filling Station obtained a licence but did not renew it for the last seven years. “We will conduct further drives in the area,” said the executive magistrate.
Sources said, sensing presence of the mobile court, other illegal sellers of the area fled the schene, shutting down their businesses.Meanwhile, the other mobile court led by the Executive Magistrate Asif Imtiaz arrested Md Mozammel Haque , manager of Hazi Islam Filling Station of Hathazari upazila, on the same charge of selling petrol without having a renewed licence from the department of explosives.The court sentenced Mozammel to one-month imprisonment and sealed off the re-fuelling station.
