A housewife was beaten to death allegedly by her husband for dowry at Ichhapur village in Chowgachha upazila of Jessore district on Wednesday night.
The deceased was identified as Sonia Akter,28, wife of Touhidur Rahman, a resident of Ichhapur village and daughter of Monayem Khan, a resident of Chandpara village of the upazila.
Quoting the deceased’s family members and locals, officer-in-charge of Chowgachha Police Station M Mashiur Rahman said Touhidur had been putting pressure on Sonia for dowry since after their marriage.
Sonia’s father Monayem provided a piece of land and a shop to Touhidur.
Whenever Sonia refused to meet his demand any further, he started to inflict inhumane torture on her.
On Wednesday night, Touhidur beat Sonia mercilessly as she refused to meet one such demand, of Tk20,000, he made recently, leaving her dead on the spot.
Local people caught Touhidur and handed over him to police.
Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Jessore Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy..
