Cox’s Bazar Correspondent :
Due to heavy rainfall in the last three days, low-lying areas here have been flooded, while several lakhs of people have been marooned.
Traffic on the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf Highway has also stopped plying as the road was inundated with flood water in many places.
The Matamuhuri River is flowing over the danger level. A number of houses in different areas have also been damaged following hill-slide.
The main road of the district town has gone under water. Several business establishments at Bazarghata and Boro Bazaar areas have been damaged also. Affected businessmen claimed goods worth Tk .5 crore have been destroyed due to the flash flood.
While visiting different areas in the town, it was found that water has entered in the shops and houses at different areas in Sadar Upazila. The affected people alleged that due to closure of drains and canals, flood water is not draining out. Mayor of Cox’s Bazar Municipality Sarwar Kamal said some days ago important drains and canals in the town were cleared using excavator machines. But, due to hill-cutting, those drains and canals have become filled up with mud falling from the hills. He further said, to prevent hill-cutting, they conducted mass awareness programmes, and the district administration have been asked to provide magistrates for conducting mobile courts in this connection.
