Bangladesh Railway will construct double track standard gauge lines on the Dhaka-Chittagong section via Comilla at a cost of Taka 30,955 crore.
“The government has already implemented various development projects to improve the Bangladesh Railway (BR) service up to the greater satisfaction of the common people,” Railways Minister M Mazibul Hoque told BSS here on Saturday.
He said the overall railway service has been improved significantly over the years as the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is sincerely making this popular public transport easier for the people.
According to the project details, the BR would implement the proposed mega project at an estimated cost of Taka 30,955.07 crore, of which Taka 24,764.06 crore would come from China as project assistance.
It said a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to this effect with the China railway EeYUm Engineering Group Co. ltd to complete construction of the project tentatively by 2019.
The Development of Project Proposal (DPP) was approved by the planning
ministry, which the railways Ministry discussed at a meeting last year, the project details said.
The Economic Relations Division (ERD) recommended for implementation of the project through the Chinese government’s finance.
M Mujibul Haque said new railway lines, coaches, locomotives, and other development works are being implemented to make the railway an easy mode of transportation as the public transport.
Referring to the 46 ongoing projects, the minister said remarkable improvement will take place in the railway sector with completion of those projects.
He urged all to work unitedly to turn Bangladesh into “Sonar Bangla”, as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
