Domestic violence too common

A government survey, conducted on 12, 600 married women across the country a few days ago, reveals that nearly nine out of ten husbands severely abuse their wives in Bangladesh. Approximately 87 per cent married women are abused by their husbands and other members of their family.
The survey, conducted by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics titled “violence against women survey 2011”, says domestic violence exists in almost every household every day. Despite being opulent, most of the husbands create pressure on and physically torture their wives in order to get dowry.
Most of the tortured women don’t seek help from the administration in fear of their husbands. Most of the husbands and their family members don’t perceive the offence. Such offences have been increasing by leaps and bounds from village to town. Many of them commit suicide finding no other way. Domestic abuse should be brought under the law so that no one dares to torture his wife.
