Dolphins are endangered in Karnaphuli river

The area between Ichanagar and Dangar Char near the mouth of the river Karnaphuli becomes home to a species of dolphin. Now it is known as an endangered animal. There are two types of dolphins in Bangladesh. One has the scientific name Orcaella brevirostris and the other Neophocaena phocaenoides.
These dolphins are also known to the people on the banks of the river as baby or baby fish, haum fish, hushum fish etc. Once upon a time in the river Karnaphuli, you could often see dolphins diving, swimming and jumping.
But now the river is flooded with large cargo ships, countless lighterage ships, and thousands of small and large fishing trawlers. As a result, the number of dolphin is decreasing.
According to the local Sampan fishermen, they wander around the river all day hoping to catch fish. However, at the junction of tides and ebbs, their movement increases.
At this time cargo ships started entering and leaving Chattogram port. Dolphins after being cut by the ship’s rolling propeller. Later the dead dolphin floated in the water.
Freshwater dolphins are commonly seen roaming the Karnaphuli river. The animal is now endangered on the red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Apart from Karnaphuli, some dolphins are also found in Halda river.Their main food is small and medium size fish.
