Department of Environment (DoE) in Chattogram on Wednesday sealed off International Tobacco Industries Limited for running operation without environmental clearance certificate.
Mohammad Nurullah Nuri, director of DoE in the port city, led a drive at Chandgaon industrial area and sealed off the company and disconnected its utility services including gas and electricity.
Nurullah Nuri said the tobacco industry was fined Tk 70 lakh in September for not obtaining clearance certificate.
“We have ordered the company not to run any operation until it obtains the certificate but defying the instruction it has been continuing its operation — prompting us to launch the drive today,” the official said.
Ehasanul Azim, manager of the company, could not be reached for comments.
The DoE also fined nine business establishments Tk 4.09 lakh for violating its conditions.
