Doctors serving humanity cannot abandon patients

PATIENTS were left to suffer on Thursday as doctors stopped providing all sorts of healthcare services in private hospitals and diagnostic centres in Chittagong. They staged the work stoppage demanding withdrawal of two cases filed on Tuesday against three physicians for their “negligence” in treatment, as per reports of an English daily.
It is unthinkable and unheard of that doctors who bear a strong moral responsibility in taking care of the people who are ill and suffering, should go on a wildcat strike just because they wanted cases against their comrades withdrawn. This does not represent acceptable behaviour by any socially responsible group. Doctors are professionally healers nothing could be more in the service of humanity.
Despite many complaints of non-seriousness against some doctors, we cannot ignore the fact that we have highly qualified doctors doing their best to help and care so many of our desperate patients. Certainly our people expect much more. The medical profession is not for non-serious ones, because the doctors deal with life and death issues of the helpless ones.
Everybody knows the profession the doctors choose is a very sensitive one. They have to do their best in treating their patients and much more, they have to assure the relatives of the patients that they have tried their utmost. Giving medication is never enough, it has to be seen that proper human care was also provided.
It must be seen unreasonable that the doctors will not be facing cases for alleged negligence. They must have the confidence and courage to face. No case finishes at one stage. So the task of proving negligence is not easy. But doctors cannot hope to remain above the law.
They cannot forget that they are in the service of ending sufferings and saving lives. So they have to accept social responsibility.
