Interns attacked and clubbed apprentice nurses at the MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital injuring six of them on Monday.
The injured nurses have been identified as Nila Khatun, Ashim Dey, Zahira Sultana, Zahid, Poloy and Jahangir.
Of them, the condition of Poloy, student of Sylhet Nursing Institute and now undergoing treatment at the hospital, is stated to be critical. The five other nurses were given first aid.
“A four-member probe body has been constituted to investigate the incident,” Deputy Director Tonmoy Bhattarchariya said.
Sources said that two intern doctors launched attack on Poloy, a male nurse following an altercation. Watching it, some more interns joined the attackers and beat Poloy again. When fellow nurses tried to resist the attack, they too got injured. In protest, the students of the Sylhet Nursing Institute boycotted classes and examinations and also stopped work in the hospital.
Kotwali Police Station OC Ataur Rahman visited the scene. The interns declined to comment when asked about the incident.
The recent similar incidents that took place at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, the Sir Salimullah Medical College and Hospital in Dhaka and the Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital indicate that the interns have chosen the rowdy and indecent paths of attacking anybody who stands on their whims.
