Staff Reporter :The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) authorities conducted an eviction drive in the city’s biggest wholesale kitchen market in Karwan Bazar despite the businessmen’s protest on Tuesday morning. The DNCC announced continuation of the drive to evict the illegal establishments every week after the businessmen failed to meet the deadline of shifting their shops to Mohakhali Kancha Bazar March 31. The businessmen blocked the Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue in the afternoon, vandalized some vehicles, including a microbus of the City Corporation. The blockade created a long traffic jam on the road and thereby caused public sufferings. The demonstrating businessmen alleged that the drive began unwarranted and without any prior notice. Contrarily, Aminul Islam, Chief Executive Officer of DNCC, told The New Nation on Tuesday that some traders had been occupying state-owned space illegally. He said that Mobile Court might be seen in action without issuing any notice for eviction. “We will continue the drive in future also, as the businessmen failed to meet the deadline although they were given six months’ time to leave Karwan Bazar,” the CEO said. Tejgaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mazharul Islam said, “Hundreds of businessmen blocked the road following the eviction drive by DNCC Zonal Executive Officer Waziur Rahman.” Police rushed to the spot based on information and freed the road in the afternoon, he said. Additional police personnel had been deployed in the area to avert the untoward situation, the OC said.
