“We have given importance to eliminate mosquito menace from the city as early as possible,” Osman Gani, the Panel Mayor of DNCC told The New Nation on Tuesday.
“Mosquito menace intensifies during the winter season. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water bodies and canals. So the DNCC has planned to conduct an anti-mosquito crash programme soon alongside the regular fogging.”
The DNCC completed a crush programme which ended in December 4. But it will continue its efforts to kill the mosquitoes.
Dhaka North City residents say there are millions of mosquitoes flying at large. Mosquitoes bite are increasing day by day with the stalking of the winter. They could not get rid from the sufferings. The mosquito menace never leaves them free even at daytime.
“We cannot take a breath at ease. Mosquitoes bite us every moment. Whenever we do any work even in cooking, the mosquitoes never spare us,” said Tahmida Haidar, a school teacher in Banani.
“Mosquito bites everywhere, in our homes and offices, educational institutions and other workplaces,” she said.
Residences from Mirpur, Tejgaon, Badda, Rampura and adjacent areas expressed the deep anxiety about mosquito menace.
“No means, including mosquito-net, coil or electric bat, can help us get rid of the menace,” Mizanur Rahman, a residence from Tejgaon area said it.
The city dwellers allege that the mosquito crews do not perform their duties properly in their respective areas.
But the DNCC officials said their regular mosquito killing programmes are on going. The spray-men in every ward are working regularly to implement the fogging programme of DNCC.
They said, the DNCC regional mosquito supervisors and local councilors are monitoring activities of the programme.
The officials also said that the use of patricides and other medicines in eliminating mosquito was increased 30 to 40 percent to strengthen the combat .
DNCC has allocated about Taka 20 crore in the current fiscal year for conducting anti-mosquito programmes.

But the city dwellers are not happy with the activities of those employees. They say that the fogging takes place in the areas preferred by local councilors and city corporation officials. In some places, the medicine is sprayed twice or thrice a month, but anti-mosquito drive is not seen in others areas even few months.
They asked the authorities to take same steps for every places to relieve the residence from the mosquito menace.
