The Election Commission (EC) on Sunday said that it is ready to hold the mayor polls of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) within 90 days.
The DNCC mayoral post fell vacant with the death of Annisul Huq at a London hospital on Thursday night.
“We are ready to hold the mayoral election as per the electoral law. We will hold the polls within 90 days since the day it falls vacant,” EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed told reporters at the EC secretariat yesterday.
He said, the Commission will take initiative soon after the Local Government Ministry publish a gazette notification declaring the mayoral post vacant.
Besides, the Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain also told a group of journalists that the panel mayor of DNCC would continue the mayoral tasks till electing the new one. Article 16 of the Local Government (City Corporation) Act 2009 says that if any post of mayor or councillor of a city corporation falls vacant 180 days before the expiry of their tenures, a by-election to the post shall be held within 90 days since the day it falls vacant to fulfill the post for the rest of the tenure.
The DNCC election was held on April 28, 2015 where Awami League candidate Annisul Huq won the election by a big margin.
Annisul Huq, who passed away at a London hospital on Thursday night, diagnosed with cerebral vasculitis after he was admitted there on 13 August.
He was buried at Banani graveyard on Saturday afternoon.
