DNCC Councillor Mizan arrested while fleeing to India

The Rapid Action Battalion(RAB) has arrested Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Councillor Habibur Rahman Mizan from Moulvibazar as part of the ongoing crackdown on corruption.
He was arrested on Friday from in front of Hamida Abashik Guest House on the Guha Road in the district’s Sreemangal Upazila while trying to flee to India, said Mizanur Rahman, Assistant Director of RAB Headquarters.
Mizan, the Councillor of DNCC’s Ward No 32 and the former General Secretary of the Awami League’s Mohammadpur unit, reportedly went underground after the government launched its anti-casino drive.
RAB conducted a raid in his Mohammadpur’s residence on the Aurangzeb Road on October 8, but he was not there at the time.
Mizan is suspected to have ties with a number of illicit activities, including murder, drug peddling and extortion.
UNB adds: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) recovered Bank Cheque worth Tk 6.77 lakh, FDR Tk 1 crore and cash Tk 2 lakh in a raid at the Mohammadpur residence of DNCC Ward Councillor Habibur Rahman Mizan locally well-known as Pagla Mizan on Friday afternoon.
Earlier in the morning, a team of Rab-9 conducted a drive at Srimangal upazila of Moulvibazar district and arrested Ward no-32 councilor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Pagla Mizan as part of the ongoing drive against Casino. The Rab also recovered an illegal firearm with four round of bullets and a document, which proved of drawing Tk 69 lakh from bank on Thursday, from Mizan’s possession.
The elite force took Mizan to Dhaka from Srimangal and conducted drive at his 7/3 Aorongajeb residence of Mohammadpur in the afternoon, said Executive Magistrate Sarwar Alam of Rab headquarters.
Though the elite force recovered bank Cheque and FDR but Councillor Mizan did not disclose about the money, which was drawn from Bank on Thursday.
