BSS, Dhaka :
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has taken tougher actions against the traffic rule violators with filing on an average 5,000 cases per day since started fortnightly traffic awareness campaign from January to bring discipline in the traffic management system. Requesting all the city dwellers to obey the traffic rules and regulations, DMP Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman said earlier, “It was a must to create awareness among the people to obey traffic rule, otherwise it will be tougher for police alone to bring discipline in the traffic management system,” Although DMP is on hot pursuit to take legal action against the traffic rule violators such as driving on wrong-side, using hydraulic horn and tinted glass in vehicles as well as plying unfit vehicle and talking over mobile phone while driving are going on in full swing. In accordance with available DMP statistics of the last few days, on an average over 5,000 cases are filed in a day against different modes of vehicles for traffic rule violations. It also realises on an average Taka 28 lakh as fine for traffic rule violations.
Of the cases, on an average 200 are being filed against motorcyclists a day for violating traffic rules while on an average 100 motorbikes are being seized everyday for the same reason.
Wrong-way driving is going on in full-swing in the capital despite the DMP files over 900 cases on an average a day during the on-going traffic campaign.
Some 100 cases are being filed on an average cases are being filed for using hydraulic horn, seven for using hotter and beckon light and nine others for using tinted glass.
The DMP has taken up a specific work plan to make success the awareness campaign that starts from January 15 and ends on January 31. As part of some measures of bringing discipline in traffic management system, the DMP has started distribute leaflets, placards, festoons, and guide books among the city dwellers alongside with holding different awareness programmes involving honorable people of the society. The DMP is conducting special drive and mobile courts operation to take legal action for violating traffic rules such as using hydraulic horn, hotter, and beckon light, driving vehicle on wrong side and for stopping buses without bus stands.
Experts say the unruly motorcyclists cause accidents, violate traffic regulations and even create nuisance to pedestrians by driving motorcycles on footpaths and wrong-way due to lack of proper enforcement of traffic rules and in absence of strong monitoring.
Many of the owners even do not register their motorcycles with Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) and often use their motorbikes in committing crimes, they said.
The frequent seizure of these vehicles has caused another problem as the yards police stations are being occupied with motorcycles, he said.
