Staff Reporter :
Dhaka Metropolitan Meat Merchant Association (DMMMA) has threatened of closing the meat markets from the 13th Ramzan if the Gabtoli cattle market lease holder does not stop collection of excess toll from the cattle buyers.
The association leaders disclosed it at a human chain programme organised in front of the Jatiya Press Club on Sunday.
Addressing the rally, the meat traders said, the lease holder of the Gabtoli market, has been collecting
excess toll from the cattle buyers violating the conditions of the lease.
If any one protests this irregularity, then he is fined Tk 10,000 in the name of arbitration, said Sheikh Abdul Barek, President of DMMMA.
They said, the price meat rises due to such unethical toll collection and fall of raw hide price.
Secretary of DMMMA Rabiul Alam said, the lease holder does not follow any law and collect Tk 400 to 600 per cattle in some areas like Demra and Kachukhet if the price of a cattle crosses Tk 50,000, he said.
Though five percent toll on cattle price at Gabtoly has been imposed for Eid season only, the lease holder has been collecting it round the year by managing government officials, Rabiul Alam said.
The association leaders, therefore, demanded cancellation of the lease of the Gabtoli cattle market in particular for uprooting the illegal business and muscle power therefrom.
Meat traders Kazi Anwar Hossain, Khalilur Rahman, Farid Ahmed, Haji Anwar Hossain, Jahangir Alam, Shah Alam, Aziz Ahmed Qureshi and Tareq Ahmed, among others, were present at the human chain programme.
