Crime against journos: Disunity, weakness of Editorial panel blamed

Speakers at a discussion on Thursday said, disunity of journalists and weakness of the Editorial panel in Bangladesh are causes of impunity for crimes against journalists.
They came with the remarks at a discussion meeting titled `Unite against Impunity’ on international day to end impunity for crimes against journalists 2016 in the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhavan of Dhaka University.
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Institute of Communication Studies (ICS) jointly organized the function.
Ms. Beatrice Kaldum, Head and Representative of UNESCO Dhaka Office delivered the Welcome Speech, while Khaled Muhiuddin, Executive Editor of Independent Television presented objectives of meeting.
Professor Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque, Nawsher Noman, brother of Journalist Meherun Runi, and Asif Kabir, son of Journalist Humayun Kabir Balu, shared experience on death of their relatives.
Syed Ishtiaq Reza, Director News of Ekattor TV, Nasimun Ara Minu, President of Nari Sangbadik Kendra, Professor AJM Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan, Chairman of Department of Television and Film Studies, University of Dhaka, Jamal Uddin, President of Dhaka Reporters’ Unity, Shaban Mahmud, President of Dhaka Union of Journalists, Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul, President of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists, and Kazi Rezaul Hoque, Chairman of National Human Rights Commission Bangladesh, spoke as special guests.
Professor Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque said, our journalists should give more importance to promote new idea. Most of the media of our country are grabbed by the bourgeois class, it is also a concerning matter for journalist’s security.
Professor Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan said there are two reasons behind impunity for crimes against journalists. Some fear to talk against truth and another reason is political.
`The trials on murders of journalists Sagar and Runi have been stopped for political reason. Only united movement of journalists could bring justice’, said Shaban Mahmud.
Shameem Ara Sheuli, Executive Director of ICS concluded the function by vote of thanks.
