1 killed over land dispute in Thakurgaon, 16 injured

A man was killed and 16 others injured in a clash between two groups of villagers over land dispute in Thakurgaon’s Ranishankoil upazila on Thursday.
The deceased was identified as Jahangir Alam, 38, son of Sirajul Alam of Sampadbari village.
Quoting locals, Abdul Mannan, officer-in-charge of Ranishankoil Police Station, said Ismail Hossain and Musha Master had been at loggerheads over the ownership of a plot. An altercation ensued among the supporters of both groups over the issue, triggering a clash on Thursday afternoon, leaving one dead and 16 others injured. Police later went to the spot and brought the situation under control. Police arrested one Golam Rabbani, 22, over the killing.

CU teacher dies of Covid-19

Shafiul Alam Tarafdar, a professor of Mathematics at Chittagong University, died of Covid-19 at a hospital on Thursday. He was 55.
The CU professor, hailing from Khulna, breathed his last around 9:30pm at the ICU of Parkview Hospital in the port city, said Shah Newaz, a friend of the professor.
Shafiul tested positive for coronavirus on June 9 and undergoing treatment at the hospital.
He had been suffering from diabetes, blood pressure and other diseases.
He has been taking treatment at the hospital from last one month and shifted to the ICU 10/12 days ago following deterioration of his condition, said a source at the hospital.
His namaz-e-janaza will be held at Kajem ALi filed in the city after Jum’a prayer.
Bangladesh Covid-19 cases have increased to 2,49,651 with the detection of 2,977 cases while 39 people died, bringing the death tally to 3,300 on Thursday.

Grabbers build house on it occupying road in Jhenaidah

One hundred families of Samanta village in Jhenaidah’s Maheshpur upazila are suffering after some locally influential people constructed a house on a road.
Sources said one Sanwar Hossain, son of Latif Shwarnakar and two sons of Latif Bepary – Kalam and Abul – are illegally building a house on road after occupying it.
The road stretches from Samanta Gopalpur mouja to Shatnalpara. Their move has forced 100 families to use an alternative road for communication.
Residents said they are living like prisoners as Sanwar, Kamal and Babul have built a house and sanitary latrine by blocking the road.
Already, Hafiz Al Asad, assistant commissioner (land) of the upazila, has ordered to stop the construction work after getting complaints but they did not pay any heed to the order. Sujon Sarkar, Maheshpur upazila land officer, said another notice will be sent to them to stop the construction work.

2 die from Covid-19 in Bogura

Two people, who were undergoing treatment at Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College, died from Covid-19 on Friday.
The deceased were identified as Golam Mostafa, 45 of Godarpara in Sadar upazila and Rezaul Karim, 56 of Sirajganj district.
Dr Farzanul Islam, health officer of District Civil Surgeon office, said 45 people including Shibganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Alamgir Kabir have been found infected with the virus in the last 24 hours, taking the number of total cases to 5,094.
Besides, the Shonatala UNO and Nandigram have been also diagnosed with the deadly virus. Some 114 people have died so far in the district till Friday.
Moreover, 3,833 people have recovered from the disease while 1,147 people are in isolation in the district.

Freedom fighter upazila chairman dies of Covid-19 in Satkhira

Freedom fighter Abdul Gani, the upazila chairman of Debhata, died ofCovid-19in a city hospital on Friday. He was 70.
His son Abdur Razzak said Abdul Gani died at 3:30am.
His tested positive forCovid-19 and was taking treatment in home quarantine, Razzak said.
On August 3, he was shifted to a specialised hospital in Dhaka as his condition deteriorated. He was later put on life-support.
Gani was a former commander of Debhata Muktijodhha Sangsad and leader of Awami League’s district unit.

One killed, 5 injured in Amtali clash

A farmer was killed in a clash between two rival groups in Amtali upazila of Barguna on Thursday night over land demarcation.
The deceased was identified as as Sultan Gazi,50.
The clash that took place at Ghopkhali village also left five people injured including two sons of deceased Sultan Gazi.
Local sources said one Latif Gazi and Aiyub Maal of Ghopkhali village had long been at loggerhead over the land demarcation.
As a sequel, both groups equipped with sticks locked in a clash, leaving six injured.
They all were taken to Amtali Upazila Health Complex where Sultan was declared dead.
The condition of injured Chunnu Gazi and Ponu Gazi, sons of Sultan Gazi, was stated to be critical, hospital sources said.
On information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body.
Meanwhile, a murder case been filed accusing 11 persons including Aiyub Maal as the main accused.

Drug trader held with 31,500 yaba pills in Ctg

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested an alleged drug trader with 31,500 pieces of yaba tablets from city’s Tulatoli area under Bakalia thana early on Friday.
The arrested drug trader was identified as Mohammad Alauddin, 40, a truck helper, son of Mohammad Hossain hailed from Ramu Upazila of Cox’s Bazar district.
Being informed, a team of the elite force intercepted a Chattogram-bound truck in the area at about 2 am and arrested the drug trader with the yaba tablets, said RAB assistant superintendent of police Rakibul Hasan.
The elite force also detained the truck
A case was filed in this connection.

2 held in Rajshahi for railway ticket black marketing

Police arrested two persons for their alleged involvement in railway ticket black marketing in the city on Thursday night.
The arrested persons were identified as Mabud Khan alias Rimon, 19, son of Ashraf Ali and Liakat Ali, 53. They are the residents of Seroil area under Boalia Police Station in Rajshahi city.
On a tip-off, a team of Detective Branch of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) conducted a raid at Godhuli Market near Seroil Bus Stand and arrested them with 13 railway tickets of 45 seats for the Friday’s a Dhaka-bound Bonolota Express red-handed around 9.30 pm.
Quoting their confessional statement, Golam Ruhul Quddus, Additional Deputy Commissioner of RMP, said the arrested persons were involved in railway ticket black marketing for long.
Such type of drives will be conducted against the malpractices in the days to come, he added.
A case was recorded with Boalia Model Police Station in this connection and the arrested persons along with the seized tickets were handed over to police, the police officer said.
