Child-friendly shelter: Direction of path for street children

Laboni used to sell flower in the Hadis Park at the age of thirteen and live with her parents in Bagmara under Rupsha Upazila by earning a few money. When she was on the way to be grown, then her parents decided to give her marriage. In connection with the subject the bridegroom’s party worn a small ring in her nose. But the street child Laboni, the flower seller, found out her temporary shelter.
Jagrato Jubo Sangha(JJS), an NGO is performing various wellbeing activities by the monitory took her in the Child Friendly Shelter and gave her teach and counseling. Being aware Laboni informed to Government Act-No-1098 about her child marriage. Social Welfare Department gave ancillary to give up the ring of nose which is related to marriage. The parents of Laboni realized their blander and prevented her marriage. Laboni now come in JJS’s ‘Child Friendly Shelter’ for getting schooling and First Aid Treatments, Later on go to Hadis Part for selling flower and go back home. There are more children like Laboni staying in Child Friendly Centre who were used to live in the foot street, Railway, launch station or other locations. For that reason JJS along with UNICEF are very anxious for their lives in the forthcoming days.
Child Protection Officer, Zamil Hasan said, “After two years, what kind of action would be happened, I do not know. If the City Corporation helps us then we will be able to do permanent action for the street child. More than that, if we achieve a place for C.F.S, more services would be provided for the street child. M.M Chisti, Coordinator of ‘Creating Conducive Environment for Protection of Most At Risk Children Project of JJS,’ said, “We have sent a request letter to Mayor of City Corporation for attaining a place for building up a ‘child friendly shelter’ by using the allocated money for street children and they will get more advantages.”  
Project Manager Nobokumar Saha said,” KCC- 22 No- Ward Councilor Mahbub Kayser along with other person are assisting for street children. There are 30/40 children come in the CFS in every day. They play here, eat midday meal and take rest. They go back to their place.” J.J.S cited, “As per survey in 2005, there were 41,474 street children in Khulna. At present that are more. But any wellbeing actions are not enlarged. “Aporajoy Bangladesh” an organization, done wellbeing activities taking street children, at present, that performance of the organization is stopped. The Chief Director of that organization said, “We had a project for three years which was related with street children and persecution of children. Under that project there one shelter and 10 schools were built up and those were stopped in last December.” He also said,” The Shelter which has built up by the assistance of UNICEF would be conducive for the street children, but more wellbeing activities are need of necessity for the street children”.
We converse with sheltered children at the time of visiting C.F.S of JJS. We heard that a ten years old child who use to live in 4 No- Food ghat under the city. Once he became a street child. The staff of JJS took him and gave shelter in CFS. We found more children who were in the same position. They are getting primary education from JJS’s CFS.
Farzana Popy is teaching the children about morality and other subjects in CFS. She said,” At first the street children were feared for not getting education in their first lives. They are now batter than previous period. If they get moral education, in future they will take part in the wellbeing activities of the country.”
Liza Howlader teaches them on dance, song, poetry oration and other cultural activities. She said,” These children will go forward if they get effective direction. We will try to give them chance to do cultural function in various NGO and they will achieve conducive for the future.
Nipa Begam, educated in various subjects, gives Paramedic service to the street children. She said,”We provide service on health and alongside we give advice about period of adolescence. We test HIV on the children who are 14 to 19 years old. We referred to hospital for treatment if we found hard disease.
 Mayor of Khulna City Corporation, Mr.Moniruzzaman said,” There are many activities are present in project basis. The councilors of the Ward always provide various ancillaries in Ward level to the NGO who are performing activates for the street children. Various permanent activities for the street children have been establishing by the initiative in Government level, especially for the girls’ shelter in Babu Khan Road and for others in Mohesharpasa. No more are available. But in future we will do wellbeing activities for the street children if we get advantages. That is why, on which none can take advantages by using street children.”
