Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni has said stopping production of current net is needed to stop rampant hunting of jatka (Hilsa fry) and mother Hilsha.
“Only detaining accused fishermen will not do any good, we have to first stop the production of current net to save the jatka and mother Hilsha. We have to bring the people producing current net to justice. We hope we would be able to save our national asset Hilsha through the coordinated effort,” she said.
Dipu Moni said these while addressing a workshop on developing Hilsha and its management strategy at Chandpur Deputy Commissioner’s office on Saturday evening.
Financed by USAID, the workshop was organized by the Department of Fisheries (DoF), Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI), and WorldFish, with the assistance of Ecofish Bangladesh.
Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Md. Raisul Alam Mondal, director general of DoF Abu Sayed Md. Rashedul Haque, director general of BFRI Dr. Yahia Mahmud and WorldFish Bangladesh country director Dr Melkon Dikson addressed the programme, among others.
