Diabetes awareness, planned pregnancy can protect women: Experts

Experts at a discussion in Rangpur have laid emphasis on creating awareness among the women about diabetes and planned pregnancy to protect them as well as their children from the disease.
Endocrinologists and diabetic experts made the observation at the discussion arranged by Rangpur Diabetic Samity (RDS) at its office premises in observance of the World Diabetes Day-2017 on Tuesday afternoon.
The RDS in association with Diabetic Association of Bangladesh chalked out programmes including bringing out of a walkathon followed by the discussion in observance of the day.
Acting President of district Awami League Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed attended the discussion as the chief guest with Acting President of RDS Professor Dr Muhammad Rezaul Haq in the chair.
Moderated by former FBCCI Vice-president and General Secretary of RDS Mostafa Azad Chowdhury Babu, Rangpur Chamber President Mostafa Sohrab Chowdhury Titu, physicians, among others, addressed the discussion.
Head of the Department of Endocrinology of Rangpur Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) Professor Dr Abu Laik Ahmed Khan delivered keynote presentation as the main discussant.
He narrated on the present national and global scenario of the spread of diabetes, impact of disease on pregnant women and forwarded suggestions so that the diabetes patients could lead more disciplined, normal and longer life.
“Most of the common people are not adequately aware about risks of diabetes which gradually destroys the immune system of human body silently leading toward death ultimately,” he said.
He put importance on creating awareness among the couples for planned pregnancy to protect the women and their children from the disease that may also cause diseases like heart, kidney and eye problems to diabetic patients.
The chief guest called for launching social campaign to create public awareness about the disease among common people and all able women to assist the diabetic patients in maintaining discipline for leading normal life.
