Dhaki River erosion threatens over 200 homesteads in Khulna

More than 200 families in several villages under Dakop upazila in Khulna district are passing their days in utter anxieties as erosion by the river Dhaki has devoured large portions of the flood control dyke at several points.
Water Development Board (WDB) sources said the affected villages are Khalisha, Ananda Nagar, Botbunia Bazar, Chalna Bazar, Baroikhali, Anchabhua and Sathgharia.
Tildanga UP Chairman Gazi Zalal Uddin said around 8 kilometers area of Chalna Bazar is now under the threat of erosion by the river.
He said the river has already devoured 100 bighas of Aman paddy fields, more than 50 houses and business establishments.
Nearly 500 families of Dakop Upazila have been rendered homeless in the last two years, he added.
Depankar Mondol of Chalna Bazar area said, “We are passing sleepless nights in the wake of the continuing erosion.”
Some People of this area have already shifted their houses to safer places.
Chalna Pourasabha Mayor Principal Dr. Achintya Kumar Mondol told BSS that they have already applied to the local government secretary to sanction Taka 10 crore for protection of the pourasabha embankment.
