Staff Reporter :
The Dhaka Zoo has banned elephant rides after animal rights activists’ long-running campaign.
“Similarly the activists’ campaigns, we thinks also that these rides were not good for the animals. Elephant rides are one kind of abuse and cruelty on the animal,” said Nurul Islam, Curator of the zoo.
The elephants had previously been made to give rides to up 1,000 visitors a day, he said.
The Curator also said that the ban was quietly introduced from January.

Animal rights advocates are happy over the development, said Rubaiya Ahmad of the Bangladesh Animal Welfare Foundation.
Dhaka Zoo is located at the capital’s Mirpur. It is the largest national zoo of the country, is running under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.
It is home to more than 2,500 animals from 137 species, including five Asian elephants.
