Severe traffic congestion has developed on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway as incessant rains fill the potholes on the damaged road.
Traffic along the highway from Jirani to Kaliakoir has been congested since early Saturday, said Salna Highway Police Station Inspector Mohammad Hossain Sarkar.
A couple of vehicles broke down in Tangail’s Mirzapur area and caused a nearly 25km line of traffic from Kaliakoir’s Chandra to Shafipur, said OC Sarkar.
Long lines of traffic have also developed from Gazipur city’s Chandana intersection through the Dhaka-Mymensingh Road’s Bhogra bypass intersection, Chowdhurybari, Basan Road, Signboard, Targach, Borobari to Tongi’s Chereg Ali and nearby areas.
Around 3pm, the traffic jam’s tail reached south Salna, said Naojor Police Outpost Inspector Abdul Hai.
A truck and a bus broke down in front of the Barsha Cinema Hall around 6am,
he said, causing traffic difficulties on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway. Though the two vehicles were moved after two hours, traffic has yet to return to normal.
Gazipur district town resident Zahid Sarwar said his son had left for Abdullahpur at 6am, but waterlogging and traffic on the 10-minute route forced him to reach Gazipur city’s Chaidana area after three hours on the road.
Salna area resident Abdus Sattar said he got stuck in traffic around 10am as he was travelling on the same route.
“There I saw all the vehicles, crammed together and unmoving. It took me a half hour to reach the Bhogra bypass area. Hundreds of vehicles carrying thousands of passengers are stuck.
Road construction on four lanes of the Dhaka-Tangail Highway and potholes led to delays, said Gorai Highway Station OC Md Khalilur Rahman.
