Dhaka seeks enhanced export to Canada

Bangladesh has sought enhanced exports to Canada alongside return of a major convict of Bangabandhu murder trial from there as Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque is on an official tour in Ottawa, a foreign office statement said here Tuesday.
It said in a series of meetings with concerned officials there Haque explained the country’s congenial investment atmosphere seeking to attract enhanced Canadian FDI and urged them to expand their import volume from Bangladesh.
According to the statement the foreign secretary explained the comparative advantage of Canadian imports from Bangladesh particularly naming the country’s growing shipbuilding, light engineering, ceramics, pharmaceuticals, electronics and IT sectors.
“He also stressed the importance of having a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) between Bangladesh and Canada,” it said adding Haque made the proposals as he held meetings with officials of Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Development.
The foreign secretary also met Canada’s Senior Associate Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Peter M Boehm, Haque reiterated Bangladesh’s call for extradition of sacked ex-lieutenant colonel Noor Chowdhury.
Chowdhury, one of the two men who directly shot Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman dead, during the August 15, 1975 putsch, is trying to stay back in Canada exploiting the legal system there to evade justice at home.
Bangladesh-Canada both-way trade current stands at US$1.9 billion where Bangladesh exports to Canada constitute more than one billion dollar.
