Dhaka ranks most expensive city for foreigners in South Asia: Survey

Dhaka is once again the most costly city in South Asia for international employees to live in, according to a Mercer’s Cost of Living Survey 2022,
Despite falling 58 places in a year, Dhaka remains one of the top 100 most expensive cities in the world for expatriates, reports media.
Dhaka was the 98th most expensive city for foreign employees in 2022, down from 40th in 2021 and 26th in 2020, showing that the capital is becoming less costly.
However, living in Dhaka is still more expensive for foreign employees than in other of the world’s most developed cities.
The survey, which was released on Wednesday, consists of over 400 places across the world, and this year’s list includes 227 cities.
It compares the costs of more than 200 items and services in each area, including accommodation, transportation, food, clothes, home goods, and entertainment.
Mumbai (127th), New Delhi (155th), Chennai (177th), and Bengaluru (178th) in India were mentioned as less expensive for international employees to live in than Dhaka in the South Asian chart.
Even Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo, is less expensive than Dhaka, which is rated 183rd in the world.
Hyderabad is ranked 192nd, Pune is ranked 201st, and Kolkata is ranked 202nd (203rd).
Islamabad and Karachi in Pakistan were declared the least costly cities in South Asia for expatriates, ranking 224th and 223rd internationally.
Moreover, the cities are the fourth and fifth least costly in the world.
The cheapest places for foreign employees to reside were Ankara in Turkey, Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan, and Dushanbe in Tajikistan.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong is once again the most expensive city in the world for expatriates, followed by Zurich (2).
