Dhaka gets ready for CPC

550 representatives, including 56 Speakers, 23 Dy Speakers to take part

Preparations are going on in full swing to hold the 63rd Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference [CPC], jointly organized by Bangladesh Parliament and Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, in Dhaka from November 1 to 8.
This year the theme of CPC, one of the largest yearly gatherings of commonwealth parliamentarians, is ‘Continuing to enhance the high standards of performance of parliamentarians’.
The Patron of the 63rd CPA is Queen Elizabeth-II while Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is the Vice-Patron. Besides, Bangladesh Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will act as the President of the CPC 2017.
According to the organizers, PM Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the CPC on the South Plaza of the National Parliament on November 5.
Besides, the main conference would be held at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre and other meetings will take place at Radisson Blue Hotel in the city, the organizers said.
“The CPA is an organization of 180 branches, including national and provincial parliaments of 52 commonwealth states. So far we’ve got confirmation about participation of 144 branches along with 44 countries in this year’s Dhaka conference. ,” Kazi Nabil Ahmed MP, member of the CPC’s media supervising committee, said on Thursday.
 “In the conference, we’re expecting that 550 representatives, including 56 Speakers and 23 Deputy Speakers, will attend,” he also said while briefing the journalists about the preparations of upcoming 63rd CPC at Parliament Members’ Club in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
Other members of the media committee, including Abul Kalam Azad MP, Fazilatunessa Bappi MP and Tanvir Imam MP, were also present there. The main task of CPA is strengthening democratic process and establishing rule of law. Side by saide, it also keep close watch on human rights condition and empowerment of general people. Especially, the CPA’s main objective is democracy, diversity and development.
 “There are nine regions of CPA – Africa, Asia, Australia, British Islands and Mediterranean, Canada, Caribbean, Americas and Atlantic, India, Pacific and South-East Asia,” Kazi Nabil Ahmed said.
 “Different important events will be held in this year’s CPC. Of them, executive committee’s meeting, Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians Steering Committee’s meeting, small branches conference, meetings of different sub-committees, regional group meeting, general assembly and eight workshops are mentionable,” he added. It is to be noted that Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was elected as first woman President of CPA in 2014 for the following three consecutive years.
Earlier, Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury said, “The upcoming CPA conference will play a vital role in enhancing parliamentary democracy and establishing good governance in the commonwealth countries.”
