The Joint Consultative Commission (JCC) meeting between India and Bangladesh, which was scheduled to be held in Delhi on May 30, has been postponed at the eleventh hour.
“I had a long discussion with the Indian Foreign Minister and talked about an array of issues including JCC. A decision has come about the deferment of the JCC meeting which was scheduled on Monday,” Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen told this to the journalists in Guwahati of Assam.
The deferment of JCC came after holding a meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Guwahati of Assam where Dr Momen is attending the Asian Confluence River Conclave-2022.
The next round of Joint Consultation Commission (JCC) meeting between Bangladesh
and India is likely to be held on June 19 which will help both the countries to prepare grounds for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s planned visit to New Delhi this year.
However, Momen said, the JCC meeting is likely to be held in June at the convenient time.
Sources said the deferment of the JCC meeting was done at the request of S Jaishankar, who would be busy with a ‘very important’ engagement on the same day.
The holding of the JCC meeting was important because different important bilateral and outstanding issues were scheduled to be discussed.
The meeting was also important because the visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Delhi was scheduled to be fixed at the same meeting.
As the JCC meeting is not being held, Foreign Minister Momen will now return home after ending the river conclave in Assam.
The first JCC meeting was held in 2012 and the sixth JCC meeting was held on September 29, 2020. Bangladesh was scheduled to hold the last meeting but the pandemic situation forced them to hold it on virtual platform.
Earlier on Friday, a delegation led Dr Momen left Dhaka to attend the conference in Guwahati.
