The Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court of Dhaka yesterday sentenced Directorate of General of Health (DGHS) Abdul Malek alias Badal to 30 years in the prison in two charges under an Arms case.
However, he will have to spend 15 years behind the bars as the two sentences will run simultaneously. Malek was indicted in the court on March 11, when he pleaded not guilty.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested him from Dhaka’s Turag area on September 20 last year for extortion and running illegal firearms trade in the area.
An imported pistol a magazine, five rounds of bullets, fake currency note worth around Tk1.50 lakh were recovered from his possession during the arrest.
Later, RAB filed two cases against Malek with Turag Police Station, one under the Arms Act and the other under the Special Powers Act.
Investigation Officer of the case, and Sub-Inspector Mehedi Hasan Chowdhury of RAB-1 submitted the charge in the case to the court on January 11 of this year and the court on February 14 took it into cognizance. Later, on April 4, the court frames charges against Malek.
Earlier, RAB-1 Inspector (City and Transport) Alamgir Hossain, filed the two cases against Malek.
