Very Much Needed To Ensure Patients'

block
The outbreak of dengue this year has reportedly infected more than 50 thousand people till 18 August who were treated in different hospitals. Number of patients is increasing every day, may intensify next month in September, brought to fore how passionately our doctors attended them in spite of limitations in provision of required medicines and logistics which are to be kept ready by concerned departments of the government and management.
The city corporations could not come up to expectations to keep respective area mosquito-free in view of apprehending dengue fever. There was no availability of proper insecticides and sprays in their areas. Import of good insecticides is under way, its effectiveness will have to be seen, reports say. A lot of publicity and advertisement now showed concern, whose impact is awaited as proper education system is not in place to teach the students and citizenry about civic sense, need and way of cleanliness. On the other hand, the traditional voluntary role of teacher-student community in any such calamity like flood and dengue is totally absent, who’re otherwise busy in political party programmes and their leaders made statements and arranged photo sessions.
Even the Health Minister along with his family was away from country as dengue broke out. He returned home in the face of adverse criticisms and demand for his resignation from his party quarters too. It also surfaces he has no confidence for treatment of his family on physicians of this country, for which he is the elected representative and elected Minister! It is unthinkable in democratic dispensation, though bright example is there in next door neighbour India, on which our leaders are so much vociferous. Might be this issue will be overtaken by another issue – such as now rawhide. Actually, remedial measures are needed for dengue in the short and long term. The slump in price of raw hide after Eid- ul- Azha sacrifices by the syndicates to be investigated upon and brought to book. It would ultimately affect the orphanages and Madrasah students.
It should not be unknown that for any public problem to be tackled in the interest of people, three stages are involved: the problem is political at the top, administrative in the middle and technical at the bottom. It is the responsibility of administrative level to provide fund and materials and facilities to the technical level who would work at ease provide services to people and give feedback to administration. Administration in turn will keep the political Minister informed who would pass on that to public and receive their reactions as public representative. As such mutual respects to each level are of imperative necessity, set rules and follow diligently. Any violation of the system, say politicisation, partisan associations, would only hamper efficiency and service, break discipline at the cost of patient welfare. Nothing can be more disturbing than bribery at any level in ministry, directorate etc., top down indent/ purchase order caused unused equipment reported in media quite frequently, but goes unheeded.
If these shortcomings are removed there is no reason why Bangladesh medical facility would not be comparable with advanced countries. Even within the prevailing limitations our doctors in zeal of patriotism are providing best services countrywide and the rest is Divine. How one can miss, our best students are selected for study in medical colleges, pass thru prescribed courses with hard labor and come out with flying color as MBBS. Those who sit for normal PSC examination for Health Service come out successful as BCS (Health) and join in first posting to a rural complex, their merit and devotion can hardly be over emphasized. They undertake post graduate courses and obtain Degrees, after hard studies and research FCPS, MPhil and MD in respective discipline. Some goes for advanced training in foreign countries on scholarships and return home.
We know some even ignore lucrative foreign jobs and stay in motherland on the plea that my country deserves my services. They’re publicity shy, even those who do not know how to appreciate. We pray for them, Allah will reward them. In case they fell ill seriously like- heart ailment, they show same zeal and say if thousands could take treatment here why not he, and they undergo surgery here successfully by the mercy of Allah.
There are patients who have means to go to foreign countries for treatments. We must avoid the neo- wealthy elite class tendency to seek foreign medical support for every matter and look down upon own country which made them big. They’re conscious citizens. They must believe that their local doctors are the best to look after them and not swayed by advertisements for better treatments in foreign countries. Shamelessly elite powerful who’re entrusted to raise facilities, they escape abroad for treatments.
True, there are instances of wrong treatment. But, to err is human, efforts and sincerity of general doctors should not be minimized. Those lapses are largely due to partisan politics infused in services and profession and their association leaders are divided into pro Awami League and pro BNP, which is not Bengali tradition. For example, I was a victim of wrong treatment which led me to head on collapse at my residence in August, 2008. I was taken to Ibrahim Cardiac Center, Shahbagh; junior doctor at emergency said to my family that he was not our patient and bewildered seeing the prescriptions of Profs. He talked with his senior and admitted me. After thorough examination doctors opined to me mistake is possible but such big mistake!
Let me share two recent encouraging experiences with specialised doctors for readers and progeny to follow their footprints to deal with patients. After that ill-fated 2008 I came to Uttara residence. On a reference got from my son I went to Prof. Dr. Deb Prosad Paul at a hospital in Uttara for advice, who conducted operation on me at this age successfully with great care. Few years back eye specialist surgeon Dr. Shamsher Ahmed operated my eyes carefully and successfully at a hospital in Uttara. At this old age complications whenever I meet they listen smilingly and give advice. By the grace of Allah I am stepping forward and hope progeny to follow them. I wish their success and long life at the service of humanity.
