The post-deprived Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), student wing of BNP, are active again on the street protesting the newly announced ever-large central committee comprising non-students.
Earlier in 2014, the post-deprived JCD men also staged protest for a long time for the same reason.
They alleged that the 736-member committee, which was announced on Saturday night, also comprises businessmen and inactive activists. About 200 post-deprived leaders and activists of JCD gathered in front of the BNP party office in the capital’s Nayapaltan area on Monday afternoon protesting the committee and demanding its cancellation. They shouted slogans against some top leaders of the committee.
They staged demonstration there and vandalized the BNP central office, including JCD central office. They also torched two motorbikes there and set fire on the street. A number of Chhatra Dal leaders said that another committee would be needed to run such a large central committee.
They alleged that most of the members of the committee are above 35 years and they are no longer students. They are now engaged in jobs or business while more than 100 leaders were married and having kids.
A Chhatra Dal vice-president wishing anonymity said that the new committee would bring no result and it would not be able to carry out any movement.
He said that about 100 leaders of the previous 153-member central committee were inactive and this time almost all the leaders in the 736-member committee would remain inactive.
JCD sources, most of the post-deprived were the leaders and activists of Jagannath University. At least 29 leaders of the newly selected 93-member committee of Jagannath University took part in the demonstration on Monday. They termed the Jagannath University committee as pocket committee. They blamed a powerful syndicate that is very close to BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman.
They said the six leaders are jobholders, three stay abroad and three are disappearance. Officer-in-Charge of Paltan Police Station Morshed Alam said JCD activists, deprived of posts in the new committee of the BNP’s student body, demonstrated in front of its Nayapaltan office and torched two motorcycles there.
He said the demonstrators also damaged JCD offices on the ground and third floors of the BNP office. The OC said additional police members were deployed in front of the BNP office to maintain law and order. He said they are working to find out those involved in the incident.
Meanwhile, Joint-Secretary General of BNP Ruhul Kabir Rizvi alleged that the government is behind the attack on BNP office to dismiss its upcoming national council.
“The national council of BNP will be held in March. Some persons attacked the BNP office using the JCD banner. The government backed them as the on duty police did not take any step to stop their ill attempts,” Rizvi said this at a press briefing in the BNP’s central office on Monday evening.
