The negligence of the BM container depot authorities was responsible for the fire incident and the subsequent horrific explosion at Sitakunda on the night of June 4.
This has been revealed in the report filed by the investigation committee formed by the Chittagong Divisional Commissioner after the tragic accident.
The investigation committee submitted its report to Chittagong Divisional Commissioner Ashraf Uddin on July 6.
The convener of the committee, Additional Divisional Commissioner (Development) Mohammad Mizanur Rahman said, “After the investigation, we have submitted the investigation report at 4 pm on Wednesday.”
“We have given a detailed description of the reasons for this in the report. The report has made 20 recommendations to prevent such horrific accidents in the future,” he added.
He said there must have been negligence on the part of the owner for the accident. The depot lacked skilled manpower. The firefighting system was weak. He further said that out of the 20 recommendations, the most important one is the need of updating the container depot or off-dock policy.
The other members of the nine-member committee were: Additional DIG of Chittagong Range of Police Zakir Hossain Khan, Additional Commissioner of Chittagong Custom House Dr. Abu Nur Rashed, Mufidul Alam, Director, Department of Environment, Chittagong District, Major Abu Hena, 1st Engineer Battalion, 24 Infantry Division of the Army. Kauser Jahan, Chittagong Port Director (Transport) Enamul Karim and Chittagong Explosives Inspector Tofazzal Hossain.
