Zubair murder: Depositions of witnesses recording deferred

A Dhaka court on Thursday deferred recording the depositions of in the case filed over the murder of Jahangirnagar University (JU) student Zubair Ahmed, as none of the remaining witnesses appeared to the court on the scheduled day (Thursday).
Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal-4, Judge ABM Nizamul passed the order. However, thirteen accused who are on bail were present in the courtroom.
However, on January 29, a police investigation report submitted to the tribunal claiming that the allegation of assault and threat of murder on two JU students by six of the accused in the case, was found authentic. The report says, it is true that the 13 accused in the Zubair murder case, six  
were found to have been involved in a physical assault on JU students Razibul Islam and Nazmul Hossain near the Dhaka District Court premises after they had appeared before the tribunal on January 19. The report conducted by Dhaka’s Kotwali Police Station Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam was based on a general diary (GD) by the assaulted.
The GD includes the names of accused killers Khandaker Ashiqul Islam Ashiq, Khan Mohammad Rais, Zahid Hasan, Mahbub Akram, Nazmus Sakib Topu and Ishtiaque Mehbub Arup.
Zubair Ahmed, 23, an undergraduate student of English Department at JU, died at the United Hospital in the capital on January 9 in 2012, hours into his abduction and tortures on the JU campus by his political opponents on January 8 of the year.
The tribunal on September 7 last year framed charges against the 13 accused in the case. The accused are: Shafiul Alam Setu, Avinandan Kundu Ovi, Khandaker Ashiqul Islam Ashiq, Khan Mohammad Rais, Zahid Hasan, Mazharul Islam and Mahmudul Hasan Masud, Mahbub Akram, Nazmus Sakib Topu, Nazmul Hossain Plabon, Rashedul Islam Raju, Ishtiaque Mehbub Arup and Kamruzzaman Shohag.
